Tunisia/Uruguay: Jhinaoui meets with Uruguay’s President of Chamber of Deputies

The role of parliamentary diplomacy in consolidating cooperation between Tunisia and Uruguay was at the centre of the meeting between Foreign Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui and President of the Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay, Cecilia Bottino.

During the meeting, the Minister, who paid an official visit to Uruguay on Wednesday, reviewed the various phases of the democratic transition in Tunisia and the measures taken to strengthen this process, such as the promulgation of a new constitution and the holding of legislative and presidential elections in 2014.

Jhinaoui recalled Tunisia's commitment to ensuring equality among citizens, emphasising the improvement of the Tunisian experience in the field of recognition of women's rights and its role in society. 

He also presented an overview of the main structural and legislative reforms undertaken by the Tunisian government to ensure the success of the economic transition.

For her part, the President of the Chamber of Deputies of Uruguay, Cecilia Bottino, commended the measures taken by Tunisia towards democratisation and the progress made in favour of Tunisian women. She voiced will to visit Tunisia, which is a model to follow in the Arab world, in order to learn about the activities of Tunisian women MPs and the role of civil society organisations and the women's movement in Tunisia.
