During this visit, the first of a Tunisian Foreign Minister since the establishment of diplomatic relations with Uruguay in 1965, both sides discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

Mr. Jihnaoui praised the exceptional level of political relations between the two countries, which constitute an adequate platform to boost and diversify the bilateral cooperation areas.

It stressed the importance of accelerating the establishment of a legal framework governing bilateral relations with a view to developing partnership, in particular in the fields of agriculture, agri-food industries, communication technologies and education.

The Minister also called for increased trade, calling on Uruguay to support Tunisia in the ongoing negotiations for the signing of the Free Trade Agreement with the South American Common Market (MERCOSUR).

For his part, the Uruguayan Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed his country's determination to promote bilateral cooperation relations in priority areas for both countries and to exchange experiences with Tunisia, particularly in areas where Uruguay has pioneering experience, such as reforming educational programmes, developing programmes and improving the quality of tourist services.

The meeting also provided an opportunity for an exchange of views on issues of common interest at the regional and international levels. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen political consultations, particularly at the multilateral level, especially as Tunisia prepares to present its candidature as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
