Jhinaoui meets with senior UN officials on fringes of UNGA 74

Foreign Affairs Minister Khemaies Jhinaoui met on Monday in New York with senior United Nations officials, on the occasion of the 74th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 74) held on September 23-30,

under the theme: “Galvanising multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action and inclusion.”

During a high-level meeting on the Universal Health Coverage (UHC), Jhianoui stated that Tunisia voices satisfaction at the adoption of the political declaration on this issue.

He reviewed on this occasion, the achievements accomplished by Tunisia in this field, calling for a greater involvement of the private sector in the efforts for comprehensive health care coverage and for boosting bilateral and multilateral co-operation. The goal is to implement the political declaration and to achieve the sustainable Development Programme by 2030.

Besides, Jhinaoui took part in the UN High-level Forum on "food security and the achievement of sustainable development goals in Africa: Which role for the south-south cooperation and tripartite cooperation?.”

This initiative aims to strengthen the framework of mutual co-operation with all the international and regional bodies, with a view to achieve the sustainable development goals, in particular the elimination of hunger, guarantee of food security, improvement of nutrition and promotion of sustainable agriculture.

At a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, Jhinaoui asserted Tunisia’s willingness to step up co-operation with the peacekeeping operations department during its 2020-2021 term as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, as well as its readiness to increase its contribution to UN peacekeeping operations.

For his part, the UN official commended Tunisia’s contributions to these operations and hailed the Tunisian staff working in this field. Tunisia is partaking in seven UN missions, including the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali (MINUSMA)

The FM also had a meeting on Monday with Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie Louise Mushikiwabo, during which both sides discussed the latest preparations made by Tunisia ahead of the 18th session of La Francophonie Summit in 2020, which will coincide with the 50th anniversary of the creation of this organisation.
