M.Jerandi welcomed, in his speech, the role of the United Nations, since its creation in 1945, in the prevention of the scourge of war and the resolution of conflicts.

He noted that humanity is facing new threats to international peace and security, including terrorist groups, cybercrimes, climate change and the spread of epidemics.

In this context, the Minister stressed that the disastrous fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the extent of the challenges facing the world, hence the need to revise the means and tools used to address peace and security issues.

Jerandi recalled, in this vein, that Tunisia had called, from the beginning of the pandemic, to adopt a new approach based on effective international solidarity.

"Tunisia, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, has presented, in cooperation with France, a draft resolution with a view to carrying out joint action to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

This led to the unanimous adoption of Resolution 2532 on July 1, 2020",

The high-level open debate on peacebuilding and sustaining peace is being held at the initiative of St. Vincent and the Grenadines which assumes the presidency of the Security Council for November this year.
